UK scientists have developed an air decontamination device that kills Coronavirus in internal spaces to give 99.9999% protection within minutes, uniquely, without using air filters. Instead, it replicates the optimal outdoors ‘Open Air Factor’ of sunlight and fresh air to recreate conditions that are proven to kill viral pathogens instantly.
Developed by scientists at Hydroxyl Technologies, the unit works by emitting naturally occurring hydroxyl radicals together with ozone and linalool, a plant oil, to create a continuous ‘hydroxyl cascade’. This instantly damages the delicate cell membrane of any virus on contact, deactivates the protein it needs to enter human cells, and disrupts its DNA, rendering it harmless.
Tested at the Government’s Porton Down research facility and the UK’s Building Research Establishment, the technology eliminated in minutes aerosols of MS2 Coliphage, which is used as a surrogate in research as it is tougher to destroy than most pathogenic viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, but is harmless to people.
No other air cleaning technology does this. Current systems rely on filtering to clean the air that has to pass through the unit. This can take several hours to reach a maximum level of contaminant reduction, but meanwhile, new contaminated air can enter the space – and some air in a room will never reach the purifier because of rising warm air and moving air currents.
The air purifier destroys all viruses including variants and could be wall-mounted or added to ventilation systems to enable a full and safe return of people to indoor work and leisure activities and use of transport systems.
